Day 43 – Visas and The Evil Attorney

What a day…

Today started with Lanie not feeling good. Her tummy hurt possibly from the vaccines or the medicine I gave for the vaccines. Mauricio picked us up at 11:30 to go get her visa and to discuss with the US Embassy our issues with our previous attorney. When he arrived, I was holding Lanie who then threw up all over me and the entry floor. It was glorious! There was no rescheduling of our appointments so… We changed our clothes, brought a plastic bag and another change of clothes with us and away we went. Lanie just laid in my lap a lot and was puny. She hung with me through all of the appointments and about an hour into them she was feeling better. All was well with her from there on.

Our Adoption Appointments

The appointments went well. We should pick up the visa in the morning. It was an interesting day as far as discussions about our old attorney goes. Evidentially she’s been calling our new attorney, the head of ICBF (Child protective services here that our adoption goes through) and a few others trying to stop our adoption and exert her frustrations the entire time we have been in country. Last Thursday she was extremely mad and said lots of irate things when our adoption was finalized. They chose to not tell me until everything was final today. I am apauled that someone in this industry would act in such a way that shows little care for the children or others.

I spoke with the head of the ICBF today concerning the matter. We are fortunate to have gotten everything through. There is another family that she is holding the paperwork for and with recent changes in ICBF if there papers aren’t in by July 15, they will never be able to adopt from Colombia. She said the old agency hasn’t paid her so she’s not releasing the papers. The head of the ICBF was able to hear my side of the story which confirmed several truths verses the confusion of the situation. I also spoke to the US Embassy on the matter.  He gave me some places I could file several complaints. Those involved simply don’t want her to be able to continue to hurt other children and families as well. As I told the US Embassy and ICBF today, one’s integrity and character are shown not when life is going well, but when it is hard and you aren’t treated well. Luz was not fully paid by our old agency. We all lost a lot of money on the closing of the old agency. However, she chose to take that anger out on us and another family along with our Lanie. That is very disappointing. My new attorney was AWESOME. I was also able to give great feedback on my new agency which was good. So… Now I have several complaints to file and a formal letter to write to all involved.

Lost

After getting back today from our appointments Lanie was feeling great so she and I went for a walk. There are lots of stores and places to go and look at near by. I’ve only been out with another mom this week. There are lots of streets and back ways to go places. Lets just say I couldn’t find my way home. There are no maps and no GPS. I called my rep here who laughed at me and then got me home. She said I’m not allowed out of the Hotel again alone. Fine by me… I plan to be gone the next two days! It’s too hard having Lanie here at the hotel. I blink and she’s in some other family’s bedroom or asking another hotel guest to swing her. I need a leash for her! So… We’re going on Bogota adventures for the next two days!
